What Makes an Ideal Eyelid Surgery Candidate?

What Makes an Ideal Eyelid Surgery Candidate?

Men and women experiencing sagging skin around the eyelids can benefit from a procedure called blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. At my Toronto-area practice, I often perform this procedure on patients who want to fight signs of aging and achieve a more youthful, refreshed appearance. However, it’s also a popular procedure for some people in their 20s and 30s who have inherited traits like bags under their eyes.

Many patients aren’t sure if their needs would be best addressed by eyelid surgery or other options like a surgical brow lift or nonsurgical injectable treatments. There are several considerations to take into account if you’re wondering whether eyelid surgery is right for you, and I’d like to share my insight as a board-certified facial plastic surgeon.

What Eyelid Surgery Treats

Eyelid surgery is an effective approach to treating puffiness or sagging skin around the eyes. During the procedure, I make a small, easily disguised incision that allows me to remove or reposition fat and tighten skin. This is a strong option for patients looking to address:

  • Excess or drooping skin around the upper eyelids
  • Sagging lower eyelid skin or under-eye puffiness
  • Naturally hooded eyelids

In severe cases, this procedure may even improve vision by clearing the eyes of tissue that may be crowding the sight line.

Eye Surgery Candidates

An ideal candidate for eyelid surgery is someone who does not smoke or have a serious eye issue. A few conditions that may cause complications are dry eyes, diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, or allergies. We will discuss these issues during your consultation if necessary, and we may require a preoperative consultation with an ophthalmologist.

Potential candidates should also have the ability to take time off, as recovery can last from 10 days to 2 weeks.

Other Eye Procedure Options

Eyelid surgery is not the only procedure available for patients looking to address concerns around the eyes. Many surgical and even nonsurgical approaches can prove to be more effective for certain issues.

  • Injectable treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers work well for filling in dark circles around the eyelids and smoothing out crow’s feet and other wrinkles
  • A surgical brow lift is a better option to improve the heaviness in thicker skin above the eyelid

When you come in for a consultation, I will discuss all available options with you and create a custom treatment plan designed to address your unique concerns. I take great care to provide my patients with results that help them feel more confident than ever.
